What’s Your Skin Type?

Skin types include normal, oily, dry, and sensitive. Some people also have a combination of skin types in different areas of their skin.

Your skin type can change over time. For example, younger people are more likely than older people to have a normal skin type.

Skin types vary depending upon factors such as:

Water content, which affects your skin's comfort and elasticity Oil (lipid) content, which affects your skin's softness and sensitivity level

Normal Skin Type

Normal skin is not too dry and not too oily. It has:

No or few imperfections No severe sensitivity Barely visible pores A radiant complexion

Combination Skin Type

A combination skin type can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in others, such as the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin). Many people have combination skin, which may benefit from slightly different types of skin care in different areas.

Combination skin can produce:

Overly dilated pores Blackheads Shiny skin

Dry Skin Type

Dry skin can produce:

Almost invisible pores Dull, rough complexion Red patches Less elasticity More visible lines When exposed to drying factors, skin can crack, peel, or become itchy, irritated, or inflamed. If your skin is very dry, it can become rough and scaly, especially on the backs of your hands, arms, and legs.

Dry skin may be caused or made worse by:

Genetic factors Aging or hormonal changes Weather such as wind, sun, or cold Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning beds Indoor heating Long, hot baths and showers Ingredients in soaps, cosmetics, or cleansers Medications

Here are some tips for taking better care of dry skin:

Take shorter showers and baths, no more than once daily. Use mild, gentle soaps or cleansers. Avoid deodorant soaps. Don't scrub while bathing or drying. Apply a rich moisturizer right after bathing. Ointments and creams may work better than lotions for dry skin but are often messier. Reapply as needed throughout the day. Use a humidifier and don't let indoor temperatures get too hot. Wear gloves when using cleaning agents, solvents, or household detergents.

Oily Skin Type

Oily skin can produce:

Enlarged pores Dull or shiny, thick complexion Blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes Oiliness can change depending upon the time of year or the weather. Oily skin can be caused or made worse by:

Puberty or other hormonal imbalances Stress Exposure to heat or too much humidity To take care of oily skin:

Wash your skin no more than twice a day and after you perspire heavily. Use a gentle cleanser and don't scrub. Don't pick, pop, or squeeze pimples. This prolongs healing time. Use products labeled as "noncomedogenic." They tend not to clog pores.

Sensitive Skin Type

If your skin is sensitive, try to find out what your triggers are so you can avoid them. You may have sensitive skin for a variety of reasons, but often it's in response to particular skin care products.

Sensitive skin can show up as:

Redness Itching Burning Dryness

The Basics of Skin Care

These tips will help your skin stay healthier no matter its type.

Use a broad spect rum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Avoid direct sunlight and wear a hat and sunglasses. Don't smoke. Stay hydrated. Wash your skin thoroughly every day and never wear makeup to bed. Moisturize your skin.

Clear Skin Diet

By Alan C Logan

While acne has long been a problem for adolescents, in recent decades - the last fifty years specifically - acne has been on the rise among adults as well, particularly among women. Many scientists have traced his upsurge to changes in the dietary habits of North Americans. The Clear Skin Diet is designed to help those who suffer from acne to understand: What it is Why they have it What it has to do with their eating habits And what they can do to prevent it or lessen its impact Modern research shows: That there is a strong causal connection between certain kinds of foods and acne.

That certain fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, protect against acne, while others, saturated or trans fats, can promote acne by increasing the level of inflammation and oxidative stress in the skin. Culinary herbs like ginger and turmeric are known to dampen acne breakouts.

These same dietary stresses also influence the level of the hormones that cause acne. While fruits and vegetables, green tea, soy, fish, berries, and fiber-rich whole foods lessen these androgens, meat and milk promote these acne-related hormones, as do sugar and low-fiber carbohydrates. There also is a strong causal connection between the brain and the skin. When a person experiences anxiety and depression, acne-producing hormones are released, which can lead to poor dietary choices high in saturated fats and sugars.

The Clear Skin Diet introduces the acne diet and lifestyle. Dietary requirements for protecting the skin are listed - along with suggested food supplements when they cannot be easily met - and summarized, as well as mind-body medical interventions that can influence acne hormones and lessen their impact. Also included are 50 acne-preventive recipes, along with information on how one can locate the ingredients that are not readily available in most grocery stores.

The zany advice women were given when they first g...

Don’t clean the freezer. Avoid tennis. Watch out for sharks.

-- Playtex® Gentle Glide® 360™ Tampons collects the zany advice women were given when they first got their periods--

Don’t get a perm, because your hair won’t hold the curl. Only sleep on your side and switch sides every three hours. Don’t swim in the ocean, or sharks will find you. Canadian women are often given advice from mom, relatives and friends when they get their period for the first time. But is the information accurate and informative? According to the zany, hilarious and touching information being shared, perhaps not.

To get the conversation started about ‘that time of the month’, Playtex® Gentle Glide® 360™ Tampons are asking Canadian women on Twitter to share the advice they were first given. Women are invited to tweet their best, zaniest and funniest advice to @PlaytexGG until November 22.

“Our Playtex® Gentle Glide® 360™ Tampons experiment showed us that women were given some very interesting - and occasionally really funny - advice,” says Sohana Samanta, Brand Manager of Playtex Feminine Care. “Some of the advice was clearly very inaccurate, such as: ‘if you swim during your period, your tampon will absorb water and you’ll sink.’ At Playtex, we understand that this is a sensitive topic for many and there might not have been a lot of discussion the ‘first time’, but it is important that women educate themselves on what is really happening to their bodies - and how they can feel confident, comfortable and protected.”

Some of the more entertaining tweets submitted to date are:

Don’t go dancing because your period makes you crazy

Don’t wash your hair because it will give you headaches

Don’t get a filling during your period, it will fall out

Don’t swim in the ocean, sharks may find you

Lay across two chairs to stop your cramps

Switch the side you’re sleeping on every 3 hours

You can’t perm your hair, because your hair won’t curl

Don’t touch or hold ice, or clean out the freezer, it makes your cramps worse

· Do not play tennis or ride a bike

THE NEW PLAYTEX® GENTLE GLIDE® 360 ™ TAMPONS Playtex® Gentle Glide® 360 ™ Tampons have recently been redesigned with triple layer protection This new three-layer design shapes to a woman’s body for a fabulous fit. The comfort shape plastic applicator provides sure fit placement, and the DuraClean™ wrapper is purse resistant for protection on the go. They are available in scented and unscented varieties and come in multiple absorbencies for all protection needs (Light, Regular, Super, Super Plus, Multi Pack).

“Redesigned with three layers, our Playtex® Gentle Glide® 360 ͦ™ Tampons provide great protection,” says Samanta. “Knowing you’re fully protected and feeling comfortable will give you the confidence you need to take on the world, no matter what time of the month it is.”

Women looking for more information about their periods, and tampons, can visit www.bringitoncanada.ca.

PLAYTEX® GENTLE GLIDE® 360 ™ TAMPON PLAY ON CONTEST From October 22nd to November 22nd Canadian women are being asked to share the advice they received when they first got their period to be entered to win a $1,000 Visa® gift card*. Contestants can tweet their advice to @ PlaytexGG using #PlayOn daily and their first tweet of the day will count towards the grand prize.

The winner will be selected after 5 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, November 22nd.

Hairstylists Spot Skin Cancer Warning Signs - SkinCancer.org

Hairstylists Spot Skin Cancer Warning Signs - SkinCancer.org

Could hair professionals lead a new front in the war against skin cancer? At least one melanoma patient credits her stylist with saving her life. “Sharon noticed a quarter-sized salmon-colored spot on my scalp,” Bonnie Sedlmayr-Emerson, of Tucson, AZ, told The Skin Cancer Foundation. “She said she’d never noticed it before and showed it to me in a mirror. She thought I should have it looked at.” A biopsy revealed that the spot was a melanoma, and it was deep. She is currently being treated with YervoyTM (ipilimumab), a groundbreaking drug for advanced melanoma. “I’ve had very positive results to date,” she said.
Sedlmayr-Emerson’s stylist is not alone in her commitment to her clients’ health: a survey of 203 Houston, TX-area hair professionals published in theArchives of Dermatology found that a significant number of cosmetologists and barbers are checking customers’ heads and necks for abnormal moles in an effort to help detect suspected skin cancers. Their observations could encourage some clients to see physicians promptly, and possibly have skin cancers diagnosed at an early stage, when they are almost always treatable.
Most skin cancers occur on sun-exposed areas, like the head and neck. Skin cancers of the scalp are easy for patients to over- look, which can delay their detection. This increases the risk of the cancer spreading, which can be deadly. Delayed detection could be one reason why melanomas of the scalp and neck make up six percent of all melanomas, but cause 10 percent of all melanoma deaths. [See “The Most Dangerous Melanomas,” below.]
The authors of the Archives of Dermatology report suggest that a skin cancer education program for hair professionals could increase early detection of skin cancers on the face, scalp, and neck; they are currently studying the benefits of one such program. Sedlmayr-Emerson, for one, doesn’t need to be convinced. She remains forever grateful to her stylist: “She’s my hairstylist and my lifesaver.”

Hairstylists get a close look at your scalp when you’re in the chair, and they can play a particularly important role in skin cancer detection, since melanomas of the scalp are more dangerous than those located anywhere else on the body. In a new study by researchers at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, CA, investigators found that only 58 percent of patients with scalp melanomas survived five years, compared to 77 percent of patients with melanomas on the arms, legs, hands, and feet. So be sure to inspect your scalp carefully whenever you perform a skin self-exam; The Skin Cancer Foundation advises everyone to check their skin head-to-toe monthly.

Chemical-Free Skin Health

By Bob Root

This is a perspective on the chemical world we live in and why I believe all of us should be concerned for our lives, the lives of our families, friends and the animals that share our lives. It is not intended to scare you, although it might. It is really to draw attention to what our lives have become and the chemicals, companies and products that rule it.

Our skin is our largest and most vulnerable organ. Love it and it will love you. Protect it and it will protect you. Abuse it and it will shorten your life. There have been more chemicals developed in the last twenty years than in all of mankind.

Of the thousands of chemicals in use in the cosmetic, personal care and household products industry, less than 1% have been tested for safety.

Hyperpigmentation aka "brown spots": the new wrinkle

According to Elle magazine, September 2012, in the United States, we are very devoted to moisturizers and collagen-boosting serums, but our demand for brown spot lightening is steadily rising, especially since publication of a 2006 study, indicating that hyperpigmentation can impact on a woman’s perceived age by up to twenty years.

The Japanese spend a huge percentage of their beauty dollars on targeting “shimi.” Here we call them “spots” and they can apply to any skin discoloration, including freckles, UV-induced brown patches, melasma and those pinpoint spots that remain after a pimple has healed.

Is This the Best Maxipad Commercial Ever? Bodyform Ad Takes Periods, Men and Own Brand to Task

By Piper Weiss, Shine Staff

Love Your Body – Wed, Oct 17, 2012 4:30 PM EDT

Ad campaigns for maxi-pads and tampons tend to look like commercials for exotic resorts, replete with beachside strolls, yoga at sunset, and well-absorbed blue dye the color of a crystalline sea. With that Zenlike imagery on the one hand, and on the other the misguided stereotype of the crazy PMSing woman, it must be awfully confusing for men--or at least it was for one Richard Neill, whose amusing tongue-in-cheek comment about period confusion posted to the Facebook page of Bodyform, a British brand of maxipads, has now inspired a national campaign.

Habit: Overdoing it on the exfoliating

There's no need to rough it. "Many women think they must scrub their faces or do harsh peels," says Bannon.

Although exfoliation is important for skin cell turnover, which contributes to a perky complexion, it is possible to go too far. "Overstimulation can trigger irritation and breakouts,"

Do antioxidants in your diet help your skin?

It seems like every few weeks yet another study comes out touting the health benefits of antioxidants, which can be found in foods like berries, nuts and fruits. You may have also heard that such nutrients not only help with general health, but can also benefit your body's largest organ - the skin. A recent article in The Canadian looked at whether such claims are true, or really just fluff.

Hydration is also key to healthy looking skin, the news outlet reports. Water flushes out the toxins in your body, not to mention it keeps you feeling energized and balanced

How to get rid of cracked heels?

What to do for cracked heels ?

Cracked heels can be a common manifestation among many of us and a rise in its incidence can be seen during winter months when the skin gets exposed to extreme colds and therefore to excessive drying.

The so called cracks occur in the superficial layers and in most instances it may not be extending to deep layers of the heels and therefore will most likely to be asymptomatic. But, for some, having cracked heels could be both discomforting and cosmetically disheartening and unless an intervention is made activities of daily living could become hampered.

What causes cracked heels?

Being a thick layer of skin, cracking is the painful outcome of extreme pressures that the heel has to undergo each day along with extremely harsh conditions it has to encounter while performing its functions. Such pressures and harsh conditions can cause minute cracks in the superficial layers of the heel to expand and become deeper while it will be augmented by the presence of calluses and excessive dryness of the skin.

Who are most susceptible to develop cracked heels?

Although it can appear in anyone, it is more common among those who devote less attention to take care of their feet. At the same time, the elderly, people with thicker skin over the heel, people whom would have to exert more pressures on the heel as in the case of prolonged standing, walking…etc are also having a higher incidence although many other factors can aggravate this condition among susceptible individuals.

How to get rid of cracked heels?

In order to get rid of cracked heels, one may have to undertake multiple measures. Thus, following are some of the methods which can be easily incorporated into your day to day practices while some would require perseverance and mindfulness to obtain the best results.

-Keep the sole of the feet including the heel clean and moist.

Thus, before going to sleep, washing the sole of the feet thoroughly with soap and water will soften the surface layers and will help in getting rid of dead tissues from the surface which can contribute to cracking of the feet.

-Apply a moisturizing lotion on the feet including the sole and keep it covered during sleep.

-If excessive calluses are formed in the sole of the feet, application of lotions containing lactic acid and glycolic acid before bed time will help exfoliation and therefore to thin out the calluses just enough for moisturizing agents to penetrate the sole. It will therefore improve the softening of the heel. Similarly, rubbing a pumice stone will also be helpful to get rid of the excessive skin during the bath time.

-Use an antifungal agent in case there is a obvious infection to be seen or else can make use of an antibacterial cream as a prophylaxis treatment to prevent a possible bacterial infection from taking place.

-Wear shoes with a closed back when you are suffering from cracked heels as it will reduce the pressures exerted on the heel and therefore will prevent the formation of cracks to a certain extent while allowing existing cracks to heal.

By adhering to these strategies, one can get rid of them to a certain extent although it may not be as easy as it is said when it comes to curing cracked heels which takes place with age.
