While genetics and lifestyle habits play a significant role in skin health, the right foods can also help you fight acne, minimize wrinkles, and enhance your skin's natural beauty.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a skin superfood because they're so high in zinc. Zinc protects your cell membranes, helps maintain collagen, and promotes skin renewal. Enjoy pumpkin seeds on their own as a snack, add them into a homemade trail mix, or sprinkle them on yogurt or oatmeal.

Consumers See Thousands More Product Choices with Reduced Calories, Fats, Sugar and Sodium, Industry Survey Shows

2014 Update to GMA Health and Wellness Surveys Finds that Food and Beverage Companies Have Introduced More Than 30,000 Healthier Product Choices

- More than 30,000 healthier product choices have been made available to consumers between 2002 and 2013 according to the 2014 Health & Wellness Survey released today by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA).  The new choices represent an additional 10,000 in just the last four years.

"Consumers want to eat better and they want to do so in a way that fits their lifestyles. The 2014 GMA Health & Wellness Survey demonstrates that the industry has responded to this need in a significant way. America's food and beverage companies have made available to consumers thousands of new and reformulated product choices that are less in calories, fats, sugar and sodium to help them build healthy diets for themselves and their families," said GMA President and CEO Pamela G. Bailey.
The 2014 GMA Health & Wellness Survey data was collected and analyzed by Georgetown Economic Services.  Sixty-nine companies, representing more than half of U.S. food and beverage sales, have shared data for the survey since 2002.
Food and beverage companies reported that they collectively have:
  • Eliminated or reduced trans fat in more than 11,000 product choices
  • Eliminated or reduced saturated fat in more than 8,000 product choices
  • Reduced sugar/carbohydrates in more than 5,500 product choices
  • Reduced the calorie content of more than 5,500 product choices
  • Reduced sodium in more than 6,500 product choices
Additional survey highlights include:
  • 94 percent of participant companies are promoting healthy eating and active living to consumers through a variety of channels, including websites and front-of-pack labeling such as Facts Up Front.
  • 46 percent of companies have introduced single-serve packaging to help consumers manage their caloric intake.
  • Since 2002, food and beverage companies have spent more than $300 million in nutrition and health-related activities and grants to communities.
  • 72 percent of participant companies partner with public health organizations.
"GMA is proud of its member companies and the industry for its ongoing commitment to help Americans lead healthier lives.  Together, we are providing consumers with the products, tools and information they need to construct a healthy diet and lead a more active lifestyle," concluded Bailey.

Lack of Oxygen in Blood

Cyanosis, or the lack of oxygen in blood, can be easily spotted by its tendency to turn an individual’s nails a bluish tint. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues and usually have a pink coloring. When the blood loses oxygen, it can turn a dark-bluish red and causes an individual’s skin and nails to take on a blue hue. Cyanosis is often indicative of lung problems and occurs when there are blood clots in the lungs, at high altitudes, in bronchiolitis, CODP, severe pneumonia, and a number of other lung-relatedconditions.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Koilonychia is a condition that causes the nails to become indented and curve inward like a spoon. It can indicate that either the body has too much iron (haemochromatosis) or too little iron (anemia). Pale, whitish-colored nails are also a common symton of anemia. Individuals suffering from malnutrition may also experience thin, brittle nails. Ridges along the nails can indicate an array of nutritional problems including iron, folic acid, and protein deficiency.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics : Parabens

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics : Parabens

Parabens are used to prevent the growth of microbes in cosmetics products and can be absorbed through skin, blood and the digestive system [1]. Parabens have been found in biopsies from breast tumors [2] at concentrations similar to those found in consumer products [3].

Parabens may be found in a wide variety of products including shampoos, lotions, deodorants, scrubs and eye makeup, and are found in nearly all urine samples from U.S. adults regardless of ethnic, socioeconomic or geographic backgrounds [4]. Adolescents and adult females had higher levels of methylparaben and propylparaben in their urine than did males of similar ages [5)

What you need to know
Found in: Shampoos, conditioners, lotions, facial and shower cleansers and scrubs
What to look for on the label: Ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, other ingredients ending in –paraben

Health concerns: Endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity
Vulnerable populations: Pregnant women and young children
Regulations: Some forms of parabens are banned in Denmark (propyl and butyl paraben, their isoforms and their salts) in cosmetics products for children up to 3 years
